The Alabama Legislative Session approved the proposed Alabama Gold Star Families state license plate on May 15th, 2009.  The new license plate will be available after January 1st, 2010.

Persons eligible to apply for the AGSF license plate are parents, a spouse, children, siblings, and grandparents, or another person designated by the Department of Defense as the next of kin.  The eligible person should go to the local courthouse to the to the department where tags are applied for.  You will need the Casualty Report the military issued when the family member died, and your driver's license.  If your name is not listed as the next of kin, you will have to sign an affidavit that you are a relative.
